Southwest Scenery

May 15th to the 21st, 2013

Treat yourself to an incredible once-in-a-lifetime experience.  This short, but exciting tour offers some of the best scenery in the world (and a lot of culture too), without traveling too far from home.

Day 1 - Wednesday, May 15th, 2013 - travel to Mesquite, Nevada - visit Valley of Fire
This morning we’ll depart Los Angeles for an amazing Southwest Scenery Tour where over the course of seven wonderful days you’ll experience what we consider to be some of the best scenery in the world. Our route will take us eastward on the famously busy Interstate 15 to Las Vegas where you’ll enjoy free time for lunch at the California Club and Casino. We’ll visit the dramatic Valley of Fire State Park where the rolling red-rock landscape epitomizes the cinematic beauty of the Southwest (seen in Captain Kirk’s death scene from Star Trek and the Mars story line in Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Total Recall). After our leisurely ride through the Valley of Fire, we’ll travel eastward, arriving in the town of Mesquite in mid-afternoon. Tonight you’ll enjoy comfortable accommodations at a casino-hotel in Mesquite where a welcome dinner awaits. (D)

Day 2 - Thursday, May 16th - travel to Lake Powell, Arizona
Rise and Shine! Today you'll see some of the prettiest scenery in the world as we travel through the Virgin River
gorge across the Arizona Strip into Utah's colorful southwest. In a few hours we'll arrive in Page on the shores of
Lake Powell. You'll enjoy a sunset cruise to view the spectacular reflections on Antelope Canyon followed by a nice dinner. (B, D)

Day 3 - Friday, May 17th - Monument Valley
A wonderful day of sightseeing and a busy day of travel today as we head further east to Monument Valley. Upon arrival, we’ll have a nice lunch together. Afterwards, we’ll meet our local Navajo guide for a wonderful tour into the valley. The scenery is beautiful as the valley features a cluster of vast sandstone buttes, the largest reaching 1,000 ft above the valley floor. You’ll also learn about the Navajo culture which has subsisted in the region for at least 700 years. After our tour, we’ll return to Page for the evening. (B, L, D)

Day 4 - Saturday, May 18th - from Antelope Canyon to the Grand Canyon
This morning after a leisurely breakfast we'll meet yet another Navajo tour guide, this time for a wonderful tour of Antelope Canyon on foot. The play of light on the narrow, tortuous canyon walls makes for an astonishing effect.  A tour of Antelope Canyon is an unforgettable experience. After lunch, we'll travel to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon where several sightseeing stops are planned. Most travelers visit the South Rim of the canyon, the North Rim offers a much less hectic experience. After our visit to the Canyon, we’ll enjoy an informal dinner together on our route towards St. George Utah (evening arrival at our hotel), our home for the next three nights. (B, D)

Day 5 - Sunday, May 19th - on to Zion Canyon!
Today we'll travel to nearby Zion Canyon where the scenery is simply breathtaking. Zion Canyon National Park features two canyons that intersect in a narrow valley. Today we’ll visit both parts of the canyon which are carved out of the beautiful red and yellow local Navajo sandstone. Depending on the weather, a beautiful nature walk is planned in the park. (B, D)

Day 6 - Monday, May 20th - Bryce Canyon
After breakfast we'll depart for a full day of sightseeing in southern Utah. You'll see beautiful ranch-lands and pristine forests as we travel northwards to Bryce Canyon National Park. Bryce Canyon is a mind-bending collection of natural spires that glow a deep shade of orange in the sun. You’ll see this ecological oddity in all its glory on the Rim Trail as we enjoy a wonderful hike into the heart of Bryce Canyon this afternoon. We'll return to St. George in the early evening. (B, L, D)

Day 7 - Tuesday, May 21st - Homeward bound!
All good things come to an end. Today is a serious day of travel as we return home to the Los Angeles region. We'll depart St. George after breakfast and arrive in LA in the early evening. Several stops will be made en-route. (B)
